ANNA I. HANKE

 

Anna I. Hanke, age 95, of Waterville, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the Blue Valley Nursing Home in Blue Rapids.

 

Anna Isabelle Hanke, daughter of Amel and Hattie (Schlins) Johnson, was born September 28, 1914 in the Spring Valley Community of Washington County.  She received her education at the Spring Valley School and graduated from Waterville High School in 1931.  In 1934 she received her state Teachers Certificate and taught the next eight years at the Spring Valley, Cottage Hill and Mount Hope  country schools.  On May 1, 1941, her parents wedding anniversary, she married John Hilbert “Hib” Hanke, he passed away on October 13, 2000.  To this union a son, Francis and a daughter, Janis, were born. 

 

Anna was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where she was the first woman to serve on the Church Council.  She also taught Sunday School, was the superintendant of the children’s department for many years and was a member of the St. Mark’s Ladies Aid.  Other memberships include the Mount Hope Club, Spring Valley Club and for over fifty years the Royal Neighbors of America.

 

Survivors include her son, Francis Hanke and wife Sarah of Waterville, daughter, Janis Dean and husband Rick of Washington, four grandsons; John and wife Kim, Allen and wife Stephanie, William and wife Haley and James, and four great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services are planned for 10:00 am, Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Waterville with Reverend Gordy Sandquist officiating.  Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.  A viewing will be from Noon until 8:00 pm at Terry Christie Funeral Home in Waterville where Anna’s family will receive guests between 6 and 8 pm.  Memorials are to be determined later and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
