NORMA W. ELLIOTT

 

Norma W. Elliott, age 90, of Lawrence passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at her home.

 

Graveside Inurnment Services are to be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.  A funeral services was held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 2, 2010 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence followed by cremation. 

 

Mrs. Elliott was born May 21, 1920 in Sidon, Mississippi, the daughter of Cicero C. and Velma V. Hurst Watkins.  She moved to Sidon to Indianola, Mississippi and graduated from Indianola High School.

 

She worked for Southern Bell as an Operator for several years then moved to Waterville in 1950.  She and her husband owned and operated the Market Basket grocery store.  The store sold in 1968 and they moved to Lawrence, where she and her husband owned and operated A&W for several years.  She worked for Southwestern Bell in Lawrence and Topeka retiring in 1982.

 

She married Melvin L. Elliott in 1941.  He died in 1977.

 

Survivors include sons; James D. Elliott of La Pine, Oregon and Kirby L. Elliott of Lawrence; a brother, Joe Watkins of Louisiana; 7 grandchildren, Wes, Tracey, Julie, Kim, Kristin, Lynzec and Brett; as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Melvin Lee Elliott, Jr., a brother, John Watkins and sisters; Wilma, Leola and Lois.
