DEAN O. COOK

 

Dean O. Cook, age 82, of Barnes, passed away on Friday, July 9, 2010 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

 

Dean was born January 18, 1928 at the family farm near Waterville to Claude O. and Mildred I. (Specht) Cook.  Toward the end of WWII he left High School a couple months early to join the US Army and ended up serving for twenty years, retiring as a CWO2.  He married Helen M. Duvall on July 9, 1952 at Alexandria, Virginia. 

 

Dean was a member of the Barnes Christian Church, the John Doerr Post 145 of the American Legion in Barnes, VFW Post 1786 in Manhattan and was a former member of the Barnes Lions Club.  He had also operated a road grader for the Barnes Township and drove a school bus.

 

Survivors include his wife Helen, a son, Douglas G. Cook of Barnes, a daughter, Gina L. Murchison and husband John of Sabetha, three grandchildren: Mike Cook and wife Leah, Kelly Svanda and husband Jerry and Emily Murchison, three great –grandchildren: William, Owen and Quinn.  He is also survived by a daughter-in-law Kathy Gross and husband Delvin.

 

Dean was preceded in death by a son James D. Cook and by five sisters; Trina Sawin, Faye Horne, Dorothy Flehr, Betty Ruthstrom and Alice Skinner.

 

Graveside Inurnment services are planned for 10:30 am, Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Maplewood Cemetery, West of Barnes.  The service will conclude with Military Honors provided by a US Army detail from Fort Riley and the John Doerr Post 145 of the American Legion.  Memorials are suggested to Disable American Veterans and may be sent in care of Terry-Christie Funeral Home at PO Box 61, Waterville, Kansas 66548.
